The 3rd annual NCA Quickplay was held recently on the evening of Monday May 23rd at Kettering Chess Club's home venue of the Toller Church Rooms. Although the county has had quickplays before there was a hiatus until Greg Smith (ex-Northampton CC, now of Chess Mates N'ton CC) decided to put his efforts into reintroducing the competition and so perhaps not the 3rd Quickplay in the county's history but certainly the 3rd in recent memory. In the absence of other competitions the quickplay, with a flat time control of 15 minutes per player & 4-man teams, proved very popular and was well attended from the start in 2014 when Greg's efforts were rewarded with 6 teams of players competing at Chess Mates' venue at Kingsley Park WMC, with one of their own teams emerging victors for the evening after overcoming rival teams from Northampton & Kettering.

2015 again saw the Quickplay at Chess Mates, and the sad disappearance of Northampton CC did nothing to diminish interest with Greg's hard time & effort bringing greater rewards, this time with 8 teams competing and here it was Kettering who snaffled the glory coming top ahead of players from Chess Mates & Chesspoints. ~-~{:}~-~

CHRIS KEECH

This year saw a change of venue to the more spacious facility of the upstairs at the Toller Rooms, home of Kettering CC, where previous county competitions have usually been accommodated. Greg worked with a management & organisation team from Kettering including Chris Keech (County President, pic. above), Keith Ball (County Secretary, pic. right, right of Kettering's Ron Cooper who wanted to show off his football shirt), and the wonderful munchie-supplier Graham Arch who saw to it that the lack of a bar didn't dim proceedings by providing beverage supplies and plenty biscuits, yum! (Thanks G!).

2016's 3rd consecutive year of the Quickplay continued to build on Greg Smith's footings with an excellent 'best ever' turnout of 10 teams from 4 clubs, plus spares, and including a few junior players along with our oldest Living League Legend ~ Corby's John Sawiak, and giving us a packed & buzzing upstairs at the Toller Rooms where nearly 50 players battled in teams of 4 through 5 rounds of 15 minute chess. Clubs represented were Rushden and Corby with 2 teams each, and Kettering & Chess Mates (N'ton) with 3 teams apiece:
